Stanford White’s frame designs are associated above all with the rectangle, whose stability supports the measured syntax of his ornament. To move into the round was therefore not a simple formal variation, but a genuine re-composition of the design.
The pattern could not simply be transferred; it had to be reconstituted in relation to rotation. Rhythms that hold across a straight run required a different kind of continuity when carried through a circle. Openings, bridges, and points of tension were recalibrated so that the structure would read as inherently circular, rather than as rectilinear ornament adapted to curvature. The aim was to allow the form to resolve on its own terms, without losing the clarity and discipline of the original language.
For the studio, the round edition marked a genuine breakthrough, making it possible to extend Stanford White’s pierced language into a new form while preserving its authority, restraint, and grace.
This edition is a variation of the Gilded Grille (1906), with the inner border of the grille pattern articulated by a row of decorative beads.
