Long associated with one of the most delicate and memorable expressions of White’s design language, it presents a different kind of problem from the more overtly architectural pierced patterns. Its design is built on refinement and intimacy, with a level of ornamental precision that approaches the textile in spirit while remaining fully within the language of carved and gilded wood.
What drew us to this work was its sense of poise. The ornament feels light and intricate, yet never overworked. In translating that sensibility into our own carved edition, we were especially attentive to edge, spacing, and the relationship between delicacy and permanence. The work asks for restraint as much as virtuosity, and its success depends on preserving the impression of effortless intricacy while resolving each passage with firmness and clarity.
From both an aesthetic and technical standpoint, the Lace frame became a point of departure for the Alhambra Collection, opening a line of inquiry in which structure could be carried through interval, and light and void could take on a more active role in the work.
