This frame is a variation of the GILDED GRILLE 1906. The inner border of the the grille pattern is adorned by a row of decorative beads. This unique design by Stanford White originally featured composition ornament reinforced with thin wire, which stood away from the gilded background of the frame. The result was a shimmering effect, giving the illusion that light was emanating from within the frame itself. This distinct grille frame became a popular choice for many of Dewing's paintings, especially those depicting women dressed in lace. The original frame was made in rectangular form only. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Freer Gallery of Art hold several pierced and non pierced grille frames of Stanford White design. Round and oval shaped pierced grille frames are presented for the first time at the Stanford White Gallery.
